Primera A Colombia
Categora Primera A, or Liga BetPlay Dimayor, is the highest division of the Colombian football league system. It is sponsored by online betting company BetPlay, and is Colombia’s premier football tournament. While not as popular as La Liga, this is the highest level of professional football in the country. Here is a look at each team’s history and current standings. In addition, you can read about each team’s recent successes.
The top division of Colombia football is divided into two competitions. Each season, twenty teams compete in the Apertura and the Finalizacion. Both tournaments follow the same threestage structure: a first-round round in which the eight best teams advance to the knockout stage. The second round is played in the same round-robin format, but the top eight teams are crowned champions. The final, held in December, features the top two teams from each division.
The Colombian league also follows the South American trend of replacing a long season with two shorter tournaments. From 2002, clubs in the first division will play in two tournaments a year. In 1990, the league was split into two sections, the first division and the second division. The second division was abolished in 2003 and the third was introduced in 2010. The promotion and relegation system has been in place since then.
